South Tyrol Mining Museum in a Grain Store

The Grain Store in Cadipietra in the Valle Aurina valley tells the history of mining in Predoi and South Tyrol

At the beginning of the 15th century, mineral searchers combed almost the whole Tirolo region with a dowsing twig to search for natural hints. Thanks to their attentive observation of nature they were able to detect mineral deposits in the soil. In Predoi, near the Croce di Val Rossa at an altitude of about 2,000 m they found minerals too. The high quality copper which was digged out in this area, was particularly appreciated for its ductility. The miners knew about the damages their job could wreak on their health and this was the reason why they were very religious. In fact, miners are among the professionals who donated the highest amount of money for the construction of churches and chapels and probably there is no other job that has such a high number of patron saints.

In the Mid-15th century Cadipietra became the administrative seat of the Predoi mine. Grain, raw materials and working equipment necessary for mining were stored in a warehouse, the so-called Grain Store, built in 1700. Very often the miners were paid with grain instead of money. In 1893 the mine in Predoi was closed and remained empty until the year 2000 when the South Tyrolean Mining Museum was set up in the building, located in the vicinity of the parish church of Cadipietra.

The majority of the exhibited objects are part of a private mineral collection owned by the Counts of Enzenberg. Those objects were given to the Province of Bolzano for free.
