The late medieval Schöneck Castles lies at 958 m a.s.l. and is believed to be the place of birth of the famous poet and minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein (1377-1445). Moreover, a ruin in the surroundings is believed to be the remains of the Pacher farm, where the famous painter and sculptor Michael Pacher was born.
Schöneck Castle was built by the Lords of Rodengo in the middle of the 13th century. The first official mentioning of a building in this place, however, dates back to 1155 and 1164. In the course of time the castle entered into the possession of the Counts of Tyrol and Engelmar von Villanders.
Today, the keep, a part of the hall, the ruin of the chapel and parts of the historic walls have survived to this day. The chapel ruin also hosts a fresco of the artist Michael Pacher. The castle is privately owned and not accessible. Near the Schöneck Castle nowadays there's a homonymous restaurant.
