Today, the Monte Piana is a hiking destination with a breathtaking view on the Dolomites, once it was the scene of the conflicts in the First World War, of which numerous traces still bear witness

Situated high above the Lago di Landro lake (Dürrensee), Monte Piana (2,325 m a.s.l.) is a hiking area and an open-air museum. From here you can enjoy a unique view on many Dolomite peaks, including the Three Peaks, Monte Paterno and Monte Cristallo. A historic circular trail without any significant ascent leads across the high plateau and takes about 2.5 - 4 hours of walking time. You will pass trenches, tunnels and emplacements from World War I again and again. Some points of the open-air museum can only be reached via exposed but secured paths. On Monte Piana, the Austrians fought against the Italians and 14,000 soldiers lost their lives. Today, the open-air museum is maintained by several associations and the Monte Piana Foundation.
The starting point for the hike is the Bosi Hut (2,205 m a.s.l.), where various finds can be seen. The Heldenkapelle (Heroes' Chapel) not far from there is dedicated to the fallen soldiers. The open-air museum can be reached on foot via the Valle di Landro valley (difficult ascent, 4 hours' walk), via Lake Antorno (2.5 hours' walk) or from Lake Misurina by jeep shuttle.
