In the Winklertal valley at Kartitsch, a recommendable hiking tour starts, which proceeds to Lake Obstans at 2,304 m a.s.l. The mountain lake with the eponymous Obstansersee mountain hut is nestled in a basin, the hut is open in summer. From there a fantastic view can be enjoyed, from the Sesto Dolomites in South Tyrol until the Grossglockner in East Tyrol, the highest mountain of Austria.
The up to 8.3 m deep lake is located near the border to the Italian province of Belluno, this area was frontline terrain during the mountain warfare between 1915 and 1917 in WWI.
Lake Obstans is not the only highlight during this walking tour. Near the lake, the approx. 800 m long Obstans Ice Cave can be found, an extensive cave system. A section of 100 m has been made accessible to the public (within a guided tour).
