In the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, between the Valle di Braies valley and the Val di Landro valley, the 2,839 m high Picco di Vallandro (Dürrenstein in German) soars. The mountain is a popular alpine destination, it is accessible from the Prato Piazza, a high plateau at about 2,000 m a.s.l., from where a breathtaking view on the Braies Dolomites can be enjoyed.
The hike proceeds from the high plateau to the Vallandro Mountain Hut (2,040 m). Due to the quite high altitude of the starting point, the summit of the Picco di Vallandro can be reached within only two hours. The view extends from the Sesto Dolomites across the Cristallo Group and the Fanes Group and further to important peaks of the Dolomites.
The Picco di Vallandro is not only one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the Dolomites but also the ideal destination for sunrise hikes. In winter, the mountain attracts plenty of ski tourers and snowshoe hikers who start either at the Prato Piazza or already at Braies. Also the adjacent peak of the Crepe di Val Chiara (Helltaler Schlechten) is a popular destination among snowshoe hikers.
