The Granatspitzgruppe in the border area between East Tyrol and Salzburg is a subgroup of the High Tauern with its nature park. The steep Granatspitze names the mountain group, although it is not the highest peak.
In the High Tauern National Park, the Rudolfshütte mountain hut is located, from there the ascent to the summit starts. As the mountain hut is already located at 2,315 m, the alpine tour to the Granatspitze is not that long anymore and also varied with a via ferrata, glacier walk and easy climbing.
In winter, a combined ski tour proceeds up on the a bit higher Stubacher Sonnblick mountain (3,232 m a.s.l.) and the Granatspitze. Partly the slopes are very steep but the panoramic view is stunning and reaches from the Grossglockner in the east across the High Tauern National Park to the Grossvenediger in the west.
