The Grosse Sandspitze, highest mountain of the Lienz Dolomites and the entire Gailtal Alps, is called in the vernacular “Sunnspitz”. The 2,770 m high summit is located in East Tyrol, south of Lienz towards the state border and near the well-known Laserzwand.
In 1886 the mountain was climbed for the first time. Today, two via ferrata routes proceed up to the peak, the Ari Schübel Via Ferrata starting at the Karlsbader Hütte mountain hut (2,261 m a.s.l.) proceeds straight up to the peak, a very scenic but demanding route.
