The 15th of August is a holiday throughout the country: the Assumption Day is called Ferragosto in Italian and Mariä Himmelfahrt in German language. At this time, many Italians come to the Val Pusteria valley to spend their holidays in the mountains.
The Assumption of Mary into Heaven dates back to the 5th century. The 15th of August became very important in Tyrol, when Andreas Hofer expressly entrusted Tyrol to the protection of Holy Mary. On this feast day, various processions take place also in the Val Pusteria valley.
