Comfortable and with only little altitude difference - this is the section of the Drautal valley cycle path along the homonymous river from Lienz to Carinthia, featuring a length of 750 km.
The passage from Peggetz near Lienz until the border of the Austrian provinces of Tyrol and Carinthia proceeds near the Drava river (Drau, in German) and often parallel to the railway line, off the road, partly on asphalt and partly on good gravel surface. From Unterpirkach until Oberdrauburg and from Feistritz until Spittal an der Drau the R1 Cycle Route, or The Drava Cycle Path, runs mostly along byroads. The following section then to Villach proceeds again mostly along the river.
The described section from Lienz to Oberdrauburg (picture series) is well-suited for families with children, thanks to no traffic and no difficulties. Those who want to do a longer trip can cycle to the lakes of Carinthia and further until Maribor in Slovenia, rewarded by a varied landscape.
