The Iseltal Cycle Route connects Lienz with St. Johann im Walde and Matrei in East Tyrol and follows the river course of the Isel

The cycle route through the Iseltal valley starts in Matrei in Osttirol at almost 1,000 m a.s.l. The first 2 km towards south you can either cycle along the Felbertauern Road or follow the causeway at the Isel. The river brings the melt and mountain water from the High Tauern mountain range to the Drava river. Then we continue along village and side roads towards the mountain hamlets of Klausen and Feld, which are situated at the slope of the eastern side of the valley.
The Iseltal Cycle Route traverses the village of Huben and changes to the western side of the valley, past the Kienburg Ruin until St. Johann im Walde. Here the proper cycle path starts which is closed to traffic. Across the bridge we come to the eastern side of the valley where the route almost continuously follows the causeway of the Isel river. Always slightly downhill we pass the villages of Ainet and Oberlienz with its open-air museum.
Then a bridge crosses the Isel river and the route leads us to Bruck Castle which houses the Regional Museum Lienz with the famous Egger-Lienz-Gallery. Along the Alleestraße road we reach the centre of Lienz where the connection to the Drava Cycle Path exists.
