Anterselva hosted several biathlon world championships in the past, for the first time in 1975, when biathlon was still a marginal sport. With the time passing, biathlon became more and more popular. Today, biathlon is one of the most important winter sports and achieves excellent television viewing figures, especially in Europe.

In the year 2007, the biathlon world championships were held in Anterselva. This time Anterselva attracted worldwide attention with its newly constructed, very modern biathlon centre. In 2020 Anterselva was again the venue of the biathlon world championships. In 2026 the biathlon competition of the Winter Olympic Games will take place at Anterselva.
