The municipality of Dobbiaco is located in Alta Pusteria and stretches from 1,183 m to 3,146 m a.s.l. The "Gate to the Dolomites" borders on the nature parks Three Peaks in the Sesto Dolomites and Fanes-Senes-Braies and bears two splendid lakes, Lake Dobbiaco and Lago di Landro. Dobbiaco comprises an older and newer village, as well as localities such as Santa Maria and S. Silvestro.
Already Gustav Mahler appreciated the beauty of this place. From 1908 to 1910 he spent his summer holidays in Dobbiaco, where he had his own little composer's lodge. Still today the Gustav Mahler Music Weeks take place as tribute to the great composer. The Dolomiti Balloon Festival, the cross-country ski race Cortina-Dobbiaco, the International Choir Festival and Dolomiti Superbike are further events that make holidays in Dobbiaco more varied.
As far as sights and attractions are concerned, we recommend you a visit to Castel Herbstenburg and a walk along Via Massimiliano, lined by 5 passion chapels, making part of the oldest via crucis of Tyrol. Nevertheless nature is still the element that strikes most in Dobbiaco. A cycling tour along the ex railway line of the Valle di Landro, a walk round Lago di Dobbiaco or a tour along the high-altitude path makes you experience Dobbiaco from its brightest side.
By the way: did you know that in the municipality of Dobbiaco, the two rivers Drava and Rienza originate?
