Santa Maria is situated at 1,300 m a.s.l., away from the main traffic line, and has got 120 inhabitants. It is not only worth to be visited due to its particularly beautiful pilgrimage church.

The locality was mentioned for the first time at the beginning of the 14th century. Santa Maria is a Marian pilgrimage site: once its original parish church could no longer come up with the great number of pilgrims from all over. For this reason, in 1470, a new church was built, which can still be visited.

In a short walk from Santa Maria, you can also reach the S. Pietro in Monte church, which has been renovated only a few years ago. Now S. Pietro in Monte shines in new old splendour.
