Ausservillgraten and its four hamlets Unterwalden, Unterfelden, Versellerberg and Winkeltal are located at the entrance of the Villgraten valley, a side valley to the Upper Val Pusteria. Ausservillgraten and its surroundings were opened up and equipped with modern infrastructure only in the 1960s and the village has kept its authentic charme, its Tyrolean culture and traditions until today. Ausservillgraten was awarded for the preservation of its environment, culture and townscape: many beautiful decorative farmhouses can be admired all over its municipal territory.
Surrounded by the Tyrolean mountains and lush meadows Ausservillgraten offers many different leisure activities: particularly popular are the hiking area Winkeltal-Volkzein and Mount Thurntaler. The Thurntaler circular path has been awarded within the campaign “Safe mountaineering in Tyrol”. And if one day you do not want to go hiking, try fly fishing in the Villgratenbach river, cycling or parachuting: Villgraten offers a wide range of sports possibilities for everybody! In winter skiers and snowboarders can enjoy 45 km of well groomed slopes on Mount Thurntaler, reachable from Ausservillgraten and Sillian. Children can have a lot of fun in the ski school "Bobo“.
Don't miss the Hl. Gertraud von Nivelles parish church, the Genoveva chapel at the Bachlehen farm and the gallery of the artist and gallery owner Hanns Bachlechner. Also very worth to be visited is the Wurzermühle mill on the Wurzerhof farm, where you can also enjoy yourself in the bowling alley.
