The charming town of Matrei is the biggest municipality of East Tyrol and lies in the heart of the magnificent Hohe Tauern National Park, the biggest National Park in Central Europe. It is surrounded by more than 150 peaks above 3,000 metres, among them also Austria’s highest mountains: Mount Großglockner (3,798 m) and Mount Großvenediger (3,674 m). Of course, this unique mountain panorama offers a lot of different leisure activities.
No matter if you prefer more comfortable walking tours, for example the so-called trail of the senses ("Weg der Sinne“) or a tour to Lake Zunig, which mirrors Mount Großglockner, or a more challenging hiking tour to one of the high mountain peaks: Matrei in East Tyrol has got the right active programme for everybody! In fact, it offers plenty of different sports activities: climbing in the indoor climbing centre, mini-golf, mountain biking, tennis, rafting, horse riding, etc.
In winter, skiers can explore the ski region Großglockner Resort Kals - Matrei with its 110 kilometres of perfectly groomed slopes. Children and beginners can practise on an appropriate training hill, while experts can refine their technique one 15 km of black slopes.
In case you would like to enjoy the panoramic view of Matrei and its surroundings, we recommend you to make a trip to Weissenstein Castle, built in the 12th century, which can only be visited from outside. Matrei is also very popular with those who love fly fishing as well as with cyclists, since the Isel Valley cycling trail runs past the village. If you are looking for a real rush of adrenaline, you can try rafting on the Isel river, one of the last intact glacial streams in the Alps.
