Obertilliach is considered to be one of the most beautiful and remarkable villages of the entire alpine area. In fact, in 1978 its centre was declared to be protected as a historic monument. Obertilliach is a true outdoor "playing ground“, offering plenty of different sports possibilities like paragliding, hiking, climbing, rafting, kajaking and canyoning. One of the most popular hiking trails in its close surroundings is the 155 km long Carnic high alpine trail.
Obertilliach shows its best side in spring, when the surrounding nature awakes from its winter sleep, when meadows, hedges and trees turn green and blossom, and flowers grow everywhere.
In winter, the ski region “Obertilliacher Bergbahnen“ offers modern ski lifts and 16 km of well groomed slopes. Obertilliach is also home to the biggest biathlon and cross-country ski centre in East Tyrol. Additionally, Obertilliach offers a toboggan run, a ski school and a ski rental, an ice skating rink and sleigh rides.
To those of you who are interested in culture and history we recommend to visit the museum of local history, which is located in the former granary in the centre of Obertilliach and provides a very interesting insight into the local farmers’ history. The only basilica in Carinthia, the pilgrimage basilica of Maria Luggau, is only 10 km from Obertilliach and really worth to be visited: in 1986 it was declared “Basilika Minor” by Pope Johannes Paul II.
