Altitude: 1,200 metres a.s.l.
The beautiful holiday village of Virgen lies at the entrance of the Virgen valley, embedded between the Nordkette mountains and the Lasörling mountain range in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Because of its mild climate it is often called "Merano of East Tyrol“.
Thanks to its favourable position Virgen is the perfect starting point for many different hiking tours varying from easy walking tours in the valley to challenging hiking tours to the high peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountain range. Particularly recommendable is the “Weg der Sinne“ (literally: the path of the senses), leading through the Virgener Feldflur, a beautiful landscape of meadows and hedges at the foot of the Hohe Tauern mountain range, where people are invited to prove their senses of hearing, tasting and smelling: this is particularly exciting for families!
In winter, Virgen attracts with 21 km of cross country ski runs along and around the Isel river (one run is even FIS homologated), a night-illuminated toboggan run, a ski lift particularly suitable for children and beginners, plenty of romantic winter hiking trails and an unspoiled winter landscape with great views, which attracts many ski mountaineers. Moreover, the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski region is only 7 km away and reachable by a free ski bus.
For those of you interested in culture and history Virgen offers the Rabenstein Castle, the third biggest middle age castle ruin in Tyrol with its precious frescoes, which lies on a beautiful wood hill North of the small village of Mellitz.
