The village of Chienes was first mentioned as "Kiena" in written documents between 1006 and 1039 when the bishopric of Freising in Kiens owned the "Pichlerhube" tavern. Another hypothesis on the origin of the place name "Chienes" is that the house group in the proximity of the village's current church known as "Castrum Chienes" gave its name to the village.
The locality at 748 m a.s.l. extends along the Strada del Sole, a road starting on the valley floor and climbing up to the mountains. If you drive along this road you will arrive at the parish church consecrated to the Saints Peter and Paul. This late-Baroque church houses wonderful artworks by Josef Renzler and Stadler. If you continue to drive or hike you will arrive at the itinerary leading to the mountain pine oil distillery with its herb garden and to the Issinger lake with the Kronaction adventure park.
Play tennis on the tennis courts of the village, catch fish in the Rienza stream, spend an evening at the bowling alley, practise horseback riding, cycle to Brunico or undertake hikes in the Plan de Corones area or in the surrounding mountains. In winter the ski lifts of the Plan de Corones skiing area are easily reachable in a few-minute drive.
>Tip: we highly recommend a visit to the show dairy Gatscher where you can discover everything about the production of the delicious cheese of the Val Pusteria!
