Under the name “Kiena“ the village of Chienes has been mentioned for the first time between 1,006 and 1,039. This is the time when the bishopric Freising in Chienes possessed the “Pichlerhube“. "Castrum Chienes“, however, defined a group of houses of the 11th and 14th centre close to the present-day church. These are some of the theories regarding the origins of the toponym.
Chienes is located at 748 m a.s.l. and extends along the road that snakes its way from the bottom of the valley towards the low mountain range of the Val Pusteria, the so-called "Strada del Sole". Following this road you reach the S. Pietro and Paolo parish church of the late Baroque period, adorned with pictures of Josef Renzler and Stadler. Proceeding upwards, you come across the branch point to the mountain pine oil distillery “Bergila“ with herb garden and the Issengo lake with adjacent high-rope course.
Tennis courts in the village, fishing in the Rienza river, a bowling evening, horse riding at the pony farm, a cycling tour to Brunico, a detour to the Plan de Corones hiking area and a walk in the low mountain range of the Val Pusteria make your holidays complete. In winter the lift facilities of the Plan de Corones are within easy reach.
