Unspoilt nature and tradition that is still practised in everyday life, this is what the chief village of the homonymous municipality promises. The history of Predoi is in fact closely connected to the mining of copper, as already in early history mining used to be conducted in this place, up to the year 1893, when the copper mine of Predoi was closed down. After this period, the farm-women of Predoi went to Vienna, where they learned how to make bobbin lace, an arts that ensuing was passed on from generation to generation up to the present day. Also wood carving out of tree roots is one of the arts and crafts that still lives on today.
You also do not get around the provincial mining museum. The so-called Ignaz mine takes you on a journey back in history and brings closer the hard lives of the miners. Deep in the earth, there is also the climatic centre of Predoi. The special micro-climate in this mine is supposed to alleviate symptoms of people suffering from respiratory diseases.
Our tip: every now and again, the arts of making bobbin lace is presented in the cultural centre of Predoi. A real must-see, culture live.
